What is a Fraction?

A fraction describes a part of a whole object or set. It consists of two numbers separated by a slash (/) or a horizontal line:

  • Numerator (top number): Shows how many parts you have
  • Denominator (bottom number): Shows how many equal parts the whole is divided into

For example, in the fraction 3/4:

  • 3 is the numerator (you have 3 parts)
  • 4 is the denominator (the whole is divided into 4 equal parts)

So, 3/4 means you have 3 out of 4 equal parts of something, like 3 slices of a pizza cut into 4 equal pieces.

The two names are less intimidating once you notice they are just instructions. The denominator sets the size of the pieces: a denominator of 6 means the pizza was cut into 6 slices, so every slice is smaller than it would be with a denominator of 4. The numerator then counts how many of those pieces you actually have. Read 5/6 as "five slices of a pizza that was cut into six", and the terminology stops mattering.

This is also why a bigger denominator does not mean a bigger fraction. 1/8 is smaller than 1/4, because cutting the same whole into more pieces makes each piece smaller.

Imagine a chocolate bar divided into 6 equal pieces. If you eat 2 pieces, you've consumed 2/6 of the bar. Visual aids help make fractions easier to understand:
