    Answer: 3/4

    Denominators already match, so add the numerators only: 1 + 2 = 3, over 4.

    The LCD of 3 and 4 is 12. Rewrite as 8/12 + 3/12, then add: 11/12, already simplest.

    Rewrite 1/3 as 2/6, subtract: 5/6 - 2/6 = 3/6, then simplify by 3 to get 1/2.

    Multiply straight across: 2 × 3 = 6 and 3 × 5 = 15, so 6/15, which simplifies by 3 to 2/5.

    Multiplication

    Answer: 2/3

    Cancel first: 4 into 8 gives 2, and 3 into 9 gives 3. That leaves 1/1 × 2/3 = 2/3.

    Answer: 2

    Keep 1/2, change to ×, flip 1/4 to 4/1: 1/2 × 4/1 = 4/2 = 2. There are two quarters in a half.

    Flip the divisor: 2/3 × 9/4 = 18/12, which simplifies by 6 to 3/2, or 1 1/2.
